Building your brand; Online self identity (brand)

 

Online your self identity (brand) requires introducing YOU first. The reality is you are your product. People do business with people they know, like, and trust. Remember there is no one exactly like you in the world. Provide real value in you the person, showing your knowledge, and yourself as a human being, then everything else will fall into place.

 

Who are you?

 

The first and most important part is to show people, “This is me”. We have all heard the saying, “Your face is your fortune”. With self branding (online identity) the truth is your face and your name are part of your fortune. Those are just parts of your online identity. What comes out of your mouth and flies out of your fingers (written or typed words you share) play a large part in how people perceive your online persona. It is important to remember everyone in the world has ups and down's. Those downs are part of who you are, and are an important part of your brand story.

 

When you should start to connect

 

Once you create interest in you this is when you start connecting with people. This connection can be started many ways. Most internet marketers use a funnel. Mailing lists are recommended however they are no longer necessary for many businesses. There are other ways to reach people who have an interest in you and ways those people can reach you. One of my favorites is asking people who have an interest if I can befriend them on social media. Remember whatever system you use to bring interested people to you, it is still a funnel. You want to move people from where they are to where their needs are satisfied. Only by filling a real need they have will you see a reward.

 

What should my story contain?

 

Your self brand in reality is your story. It will contain you face. The picture you use should be chosen with care. Your font choice is how you help people realize this is you. Color choice helps define you within your niche.

 

Consistency

 

Once these are chosen they should be used on every social media with which you are involved. Years ago I recommended the big 4. At this point I no longer do. The reason behind this is simple. Each person only has so much time. What I recommend now is going with the one with which you are most comfortable. Unused social media is worse than having none at all.

 

What font to choose and why?

 

What many marketers do not understand is the font you choose is part of your brand identity as well. Once you have chosen a font stick with it. Before you choose consider what fonts others in the same type of business are using. You do not have to emulate them, choose something close, or go way away from what they are using. Another thing you have to take into consideration is, are people going to print off material you share? If they are you want to choose a font that goes light on ink use. In every case it must be readable on any device. Size matters. You want people to be able to read your content no matter which kind of device they are using. I recommend size 12 for the very smallest.

 

Banner advertising

 

Most people today are beyond clicking banners. Why would they? They want to do business with people who have proven their worth. Building Know, Like, and Trust in your niche is the best way to find customers. There is only one platform where I can recommend using a banner. This is IBOtoolbox. The reason being because it shows the “Name” of the person who put the ad up. Your name is part of your online self identity.

 

Mobile friendly

 

In everything you do remember notebooks and smart phones. There are way more people using them today and the number is only going to increase. During the past few years I have met a few people who run their businesses from these types of devices. Being mobile friendly I started recommending in early 2012. Those who listened are doing much better than those who put it off until later.

 

 

Your life is part of your online identity

 

 

When possible especially on social media, you should share your family life as well. Those I am finding who are doing the best, are those who put family first. This shows people you are human. For some of the older people this is much harder. My family has passed beyond this world so I can't show them. If you have no family share your life. Not what you have having for dinner. Those get old fast. Just a few things which really interest you in your life.

  • Have you read a good book?

  • Can you use something other than business that you are passionate about?

 

Can you relate this passion to your business? Those who are a product of their product and have a real passion for the change it has made in their lives, as a general rule, do very well in business.

 

 

We are now entering web 2.5. This means web 3.0 is getting closer. With everything I have been learning at this point I am recommending personal branding for everyone in small businesses. What you see above is only part of the picture. It is enough to get those who have very little started. What I recommend goes even further.
