Honesty Or Hype When it comes to Marketing

I've been writing online for several years now and have seen lots of different ways that people attract readers to their blogs, companies and products. One of the biggest methods that people use is Hype.
I'm sure you've seen it even just today. Usually there is lots of excitement on the site with images of mansions and expensive cars. There are innuendos leading you to believe if you just give us your email or money you will get rich overnight.

And it works. People get excited (thinking they will get rich). Especially if they have been struggling for years to make money online.

And the marketer gets another sign up or contact.

But down the road, when the new sign-up isn't rich, they quit and will often bad mouth the marketer calling them a scammer.

But maybe the marketers program really is legit? They probably just don't know how to market a business to keep people as a happy customer or associate for years.

This is why I lead with honesty.

I let people know that what I do takes time and effort.

Last month I wrote a blog post where I wrote about an affiliate marketing program that I recommend to new affiliate marketers, or those wanting to learn.

For those who don't know, affiliate marketing is when a person makes money by recommending products to folks. And when someone buys that product, the marketer makes money.

The blog post, Wealthy Affiliate the Truth, has no hype, promises of riches or expensive cars. Yet it remains my most popular blog entry. I have found that people who decide to follow me, stay associated with me for many years. I have made many life long friends.

I think that hype works initially, but if you want longevity, then honesty works best when it comes to marketing.

What do you think? Hype or Honesty?
