The Power of Words

When I think about words and the old saying, sticks and stones might break my bones but words will not hurt me!  This saying is an example of how words can be arranged to appeal to the mind but have no substance.  What do I mean by substance?  Well, the words arranged, coming from the force of the tongue, can indeed do more harm than the sticks or stones.  In fact, many would have rather gotten the sticks or stones rather then the viral wrath of slander or the degrading results of hatred disguise by lying.  The Bible speaks about how powerful the tongue is when it is not under control, but the tongue is only a flap or tool that the human uses to fire rounds of words for good or evil, to harm or help, discourage or encourage, to hold back or to create opportunity.
Therefore, the substance is robbed from the saying, by not stating the truth about words.  They do harm or else the word propaganda would not be in the dictionary.  They do do damage or else we would not be having law suits for slander or misrepresentation.  They do something that sticks and stones can not; they go deep into the soul and hurt so bad that some can not forgive, so bad that some are willing to killed, so bad that marriages are broken up, so bad that damaging characters and bad behaviors are formed by these abusive and degrading words.  Moreover, the mind can be so impaired by these words, that stick and stones would only just be what it is a passing saying with no substance; it only appeals to the mind!

Having stated the case, we are moving into an political environment, where many words are flying like missiles from the tongue.  Some of the tongues will have truth mixed with lies and others just pure lies and based on our concept of right and wrong, we will be prey to these words or eagles moving to a different level of moral responsibility.  What will be your response to these words?  True investigation of the truth or prey to those rocket firing tongues?
