What’s in a name? “Zalee”

Ecclesiastes 7:1 – A name is better than fine oil

Here’s the story behind my name.

I was born 1957 – the year they made the best cars (That is what my daddy often said; there may have been more to that than he wanted to reveal; (:-).

I was named after the jewelry store my dad bought my mother’s first diamond, Zale’s. My daddy added the extra ‘e’ to make my name Zalee. He said Zale was too masculine. We lived in Wichita Falls, Texas the city where the store was started by two brothers named William and Morris Zale on March 29, 1924. On the exact same day that would later become my mother’s birthdate, March 29, 1939.

We moved to Dallas, Texas in 1957 when Zale’s open its first store inside a shopping center and announced the initial public offering of its stock from its Dallas headquarters where it and all my family resides today. My daddy told me that being named after this famous Diamond Store – was much to live up to because of the process diamonds go through to become that beautiful, valuable, and precious stone. I love diamonds and yes they are a girl’s best friend. Okay, that’s the story behind my first name.

My middle name “Gizelle” comes from the number one variety show the year I was born, August, 1957 hosted by Gisele MacKenzie; The Gisele MacKenzie show. My mother wanted my name to be spelled Gisele, but the nurse wrote my name with a ‘Z’ because it sounded like the ‘z’ when my mother pronounced my name for my birth certificate. Gi-zelle/ name is a variant of Giselle (French, Old German), and the meaning of Gizelle is "pledge; hostage". Gizelle is a malta girl name. The meaning of the name is `nice`.

The best thing about the name Gizelle: It sounds Beautiful. The worst thing about the name Gizelle is that is not commonly used as a name – to me, that is what makes my name unique. Speaking of “Z’s” My grandfather’s name was Zelmo. My grandfather named my mother after him – Zelmo.

My father had my mother’s name changed to a more feminine name “Zelma” when he took possession of her by marrying her. I was then named after Zale’s – keeping the ‘Z’s’ alive with the name. By accident, my middle name ended up with a “Z” in it.

Zalee: 2012

When I had my first child, I named her Zada Gazelle. As a girl's name, Zada is a variant of Zaida (Arabic), and the meaning of Zada is "prosperous, fortunate". The middle name Gazelle I gave her was intentionally named after the swift dear in the wild.
